I got a text from Annabella yesterday asking me for lyrics with descriptions of people/things/places. she wanted to know them so she could teach her kids in school how to go about with descriptive writing. Number 1, great idea girl! What a unique twist to teaching. I want to go for your lessons mann! HAHA! And number 2, it got me thinking of descriptive songs!
So John Mayer's Daughters immediately popped into my head. Especially the first verse, how he describes his girl,
"I know a girl
She puts the colours inside of my world
But she's just like a maze
Where all the lines continuosly change"
I like that part. And some other songs came to me too, like Hollywood by Marina and the Diamonds, Californication by RHCP, Rihanna's Take a Bow describing her liar ex bf and KT Tunstall's Suddenly I See. And of course, Beautiful Mess by Jason Mraz. That song can be a poem I tell you. It probably already is, just that he weaved in some chords and made it into a song!
And it got me thinking about musicians with good, solid lyrics. Who are they? So here's my list:
1) John Mayer - Of course. King of really good lyrics. He is going to be the next Eric Clapton!
2) Jason Mraz - Another king! This one's a really gifted poet. His lyrics are beyond beautiful.
3) James Morrison - I really liked his first album alot. And he write very truthful lyrics!
4) Coldplay's Chris Martin -This guy writes the most crazy yet beautiful songs.
5) Red Hot Chili Pepper's Anthony Keidis - After reading his biography, I realised what a gifted poet he is. And how he draws inspiration from everything around him. I think his magnum opus was Under A Bridge. I guess he really hit home with that piece.
6) Avril Lavigne - Before she went all bimbotic and pink that is. Her first 2 albums, I think every teenage girl could probably relate to all her songs one way or another.
7) Oasis' Noel Gallagher - Genius. His lyrics are classics. Sunday Morning Call, Don't Look Back In Anger, Wonderwall, Let There Be Love, Stand by Me, Champagne Supernova, Stop Crying Your Heart Out, and sooo many more. I only wish he and Liam would stop fighting and reform Oasis!
8) Snow Patrol's Gary Lightbody - The amazing man behind Chasing Cars, Crack the Shutters, You Are All That I Have and Open Your Eyes. He's gifted.
9) John Lennon and Paul McCartney - The Beatles. Need I say more?
10) Bob Dylan - Cue Knockin' on Heaven's Door and To Make You Feel My Love! I guess some of his talents rubbed off on Jakob Dylan, his son. Jakob's good too, but not as great as Bob!
I tried to make the list as current as possible! We all know the amazing people from way back, the ones who redefined music, like Queen, John Fogerty from Creedence Clearwater Revival, Guns n Roses, Kurt Cobain, Tracy Chapman, Carole King, Smokey Robinson, Pete Townshend from The Who, MICK JAGGER AND KEITH RICHARDS. But I couldn't not include Bob Dylan and John Lennon and Paul McCartney in my list.
I feel at least thankful that there are people in my generation who will go on to write great great great songs!
